Frank P Zeidler Memorial Lecture

The first annual Frank P Zeidler Memorial Lecture will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 in the Milwaukee Public Library Centennial Hall at 7:30pm. Jeremy Scahill will be speaking on Global Wars, Private Armies, and Public Money. Jeremy Scahill is an award-winning investigative journalist and Milwaukee native whose bestselling Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army received the prestigious George Polk Award for 2008. Mr Scahill’s reporting on the involvement of mercenaries in the Iraq War, the Abu Ghraib prison, Hurricane Katrina, and other topics has appeared in numerous publications including The Nation, The Progressive, Los Angeles Times, and Z Magazine. Mr. Scahill’s work has also been featured on television and radio programs including NPR’s Fresh Air, the CBS Evening News, the Daily Show, and Democracy Now, where he was a longtime senior producer and correspondent. Mr. Scahill is currently a fellow at The Nation Institute.

The Frank P. Zeidler Memorial Lecture was founded to celebrate the life and ideals of Frank P. Zeidler (1912-2006), who served as mayor of Milwaukee from 1948-1960. As a citizen, socialist, public official, and activist in numerous religious, community and civic organizations, Frank Zeidler devoted his life to the causes of peace, democracy, economic progress, and a clean environment progress, and a clean environment. This lecture series seeks to honor Frank Zeidler’s commitment to educating the general public about the great challenges facing humanity and his belief in human beings’ capacity to meet those challenges through open discussion, the building of consensus, planning, and democratic government.

SPWI State Convention

On Saturday, April 19, the South Central Local will host the 2008 Annual Convention of the Socialist Party of Wisconsin, from 9:00am to 4:00pm in the Community Room of the WIlly Street Co-op, 1221 Williamson St in Madison. Further details will be posted as I get them.

Meet the SPWI delegates to the 2007 SPUSA Convention

On Oct 19-21, SPWI members will be going to St Louis to participate in the 2007 SPUSA Convention. This is an important event as the recent actions by the SPUSA National Committee has suspended our charter. We will be going to St Louis to fight for our local, and for our party. All members are welcome and encouraged to join us on one or more of these days. We will post more information very soon. In the mean time, the delegates, elected by you, are:

Anita Zeidler, Nan Pfefferle, Gerald Shade, Steve Sears, and Dave Schall. Alternates are: Myrtle Kastner, Diane Drufenbrock, Charlotte Bleistein, Ardenne Bunde, Linda Randolph, and Jerry Stasny.
